Though not strictly a ryokan — at 150 rooms it’s several times larger than a traditional country inn — Hakone Kowakien Ten-yu offers many of the same attractions: rural seclusion, perfectly framed natural vistas, onsen hot spring baths, and painstakingly sourced seasonal Japanese cuisine. Each unit comes with its own private open-air spring-fed bath, and the indoor/outdoor public baths are nothing short of spectacular. More conventional spa treatments, including massages, are also available, and guests are invited to experience the outdoors directly, via open-air yoga sessions or nature walks on trails that meander through the forest, accompanied by the sounds of waterfalls.
