Zoo Miami is the largest zoo in Florida and the fifth largest in the United States. It is an open-air zoo with habitats designed to reflect natural environments and allows visitors to view animals at close range. As the only subtropical zoo in the continental U.S., it is able to care for animals from Asia, Australia, Africa, and the Americas. The zoo covers nearly 750 acres, includes about 4 miles of walkways, and is home to more than 2,000 animals representing over 375 species. More than 130 of these species are classified as endangered or critically endangered. The zoo also contains over 750 species of plants and more than 100 educational exhibits.
