The sun-bleached stones that make up the citadel of of Maniace Castle are a sight worth seeing while in Syracuse. The interior still holds onto some of its old beauty, an impressive feat after nearly 800 years and an explosion caused by lightning. Make sure to look up at the vaulted ceilings, the carvings on the limestone columns, and the carvings of snakes, rural scenes, and leaves that decorate the masonry.
